Dr. Kosowski joined the Shepton Mallet Treatment Centre in October 2005.
Dr Kosowski graduated from the Medical Academy in Poznań in 1983. This is one of the largest medical academies in Poland and is listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools.
After graduating, he has worked in a variety of roles in orthopaedics, urology and general surgery at hospitals in both Poland and the UK including the Medical Academy in Poznań, Royal Sea Bathing Hospital in Margate, William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and Buckland Hospital in Dover amongst others.
• Hip
Wide experience in total hip replacements (approximately 700 operations) using the Charnley, Exeter, Stanmore, Corin, Oxford, Osteonics, Biomed, J&J, JRI, Samo, Aesculap, Zimmer and Implant Industrie cemented hip prostheses as well as the Harris Galante, Osteoni, Zimmer, Corin, De Puy, JRI, Samo, Aesculap cementless prostheses. He has also carried out a number of hip revision procedures using different implants and assisted in arthrodeses of the hip and in pelvic osteotomies. He is familiar with resurfacing hip replacement e.g. Birmingham RHR.
• Knee
This is an area of special interest. He has carried out approximately 350 TKR operations using Inall Burstein, AGC, PFC, Scorpio, Nex Gen, Aesculap and Stanmore prostheses and also knee revision surgery (about 40 cases). He is familiar with computer navigation and has performed 12 Aesculap Search TKRs using Orthpilot. His list of procedures also includes Unicompartmental Knee Replacement (Oxford III), proximal tibial osteotomies and ligament reconstruction procedures (mainly ACL).
• Foot
He has wide experience in different types of procedures ranging from arthrodesis of the ankle joint, operations for toe deformities, procedures for ununited fractures and corrective osteotomies, hallux valgus surgery, Morton’s neruoma, RA and diabetic foot.
• Shoulder
He is familiar with Putti-Platt, Bankart and Bristow operations. He has carried out shoulder haemiarthroplasties and also Total Shoulder Replacement using Neer II prosthesis to newer designs like Copland, Biomed of Implant Industries prosthesis. He has also performed Shoulder arthroscopy and subacromial decompressions.
• Hand
His experience inclides - Dupuytren’s contractures, surgery of the rheumatoid hand, carpal tunnel decompression, tenolysis, flexor tendon and digital nerve repairs. He is familiar with primary tendon grafting, two stage tendon reconstruction and tendon transfer. He has carried out Herbert’s screw fixation for scaphoid fractures. He has also carried out replacement arthroplasty of the metacarpophalangeal, carpometacarpal and interphalangeal joints. He has also assisted in 15 total elbow replacements and carried out 2.
• Arthroscopy
He has considerable experience in diagnostic and operative arthroscopy of the knee and has performed more than 800 arthroscopies over the years.
• Spine
He has assisted in open discectomies, spinal decompression, posterior and anterior fusion procedures and also Harrington-Luque instrumentation for scoliosis surgery.
• Paediatric Orthopaedics
During his tenure at the Institute of Orthopaedics and Rehabilitation in the Medical Academy in Poznań, he had a wide exposure to paediatric problems such as Perthe’s disease, CDH, CTEV, cerebral palsy, osteogenesis imperfecta. Recently, he renewed his exposure to paediatric problems while training under Mr. M. Conybeare in Royal Sea Bathing Hospital in Margate.
Wide experience in trauma, including:
• Fractures of the Neck of Femur
Hemi-arthroplasties using Thompson, Austin-Moore and Bipolar prostheses. Internal fixation with Dynamic Hip Screw, Richard’s Cannulated and Classic Hip Screws.
• Intramedullary Nailing
Zickel, Kuntscher, open and closed AO nailing of the femur; Grosse Kempfe and Russell Taylor instrumentation for interlocking nailing for fractures of femur, tibia and humerus. He has also performed retrograde locking nailing for distal femoral fractures.
• AO Plating
For fractures of the radius, ulna, humerus and tibia.
• Open Reduction and Internal Fixation
For ankle, tibial plateau, supracondylar fractures of the humerus and femur.
• External Fixation
Shearer, Orthofix, Monotube, and AO fixation for tibial and forearm fractures.
