Ophthalmology

There are many benefits to using our state of the art Ophthalmology facility at SMTC, including:

  • Specialist Surgeons - SMTC benefits from having surgeons that are specialised in performing the very latest cataract surgery procedure.
  • Intra Ocular Lens (IOLs) Technology - This new IOL lens technology at SMTC allows our specialist surgeons to treat refractive errors in a safe and effective environment.
  • State of the art facility - SMTC was built as recently as 2005 utilising the latest, most up to date IOL Crystalens Technology.
  • All cataract patients are given a topical anaesthesia.  Using drops instead of a needle is one of the reasons you can expect a speedy recovery. There may be medical reasons why you will be given a general anaesthesia. The decision is based on your specific clinical requirements.
  • You can expect to be seen by a Consultant in around 3-4 weeks and to have your surgery within 4-6 weeks from then.

Private Patients

To enquire about using Ophthalmology facilities at SMTC:

Our dedicated Ophthalmology Patient Services Co-ordinator will be delighted to answer any further questions you may have.  A response to all phone and online enquiries will be made within 24 hours.

For private patients, SMTC offers a “multi focal” lens. For certain patients, this lens restores a full range of vision reducing the need for glasses, including reading glasses.  These lenses are not available on the NHS but UKSH offers them to all private patients. It is important to remember that these new lenses are not suitable for all patients. Our examining surgeon will need to check your eye to let you know what is most appropriate for you. Furthermore, lenses are not always fully effective in removing the need for glasses, and a small proportion of patients will still need glasses for some activities.
