UKSH offers premium quality medical imaging services. We have invested heavily in state-of-the-art imaging technology, and our departments are staffed by experienced radiographers and radiologists, offering a variety of diagnostic services.
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a non-invasive way to take pictures of the body. Unlike X-rays and CT scans, which use radiation, MRI uses powerful magnets and radio waves. The MRI scanner contains the magnet.
MRI services are available on-site at Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre. Patients at the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre who require an MRI scan are seen at a mobile MRI unit in Plymouth. Patients at Cirencester, Devizes or Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centres are referred for an MRI scan at local MRI units.
X-rays are high-energy radiation. They are able to create an image on a photographic film or plate. It is this property that allows radiography.
All UKSH sites have access to X-ray facilities.
Ultrasound waves are high-frequency sound waves. Ultrasound waves can be ‘bounced off’ human tissues using special devices. The echoes are then converted into a picture called a sonogram. Ultrasound imaging, referred to as ultrasonography, allows doctors and patients to get an inside view of soft tissues and body cavities, without using invasive techniques.
Cirencester, Devizes, Emersons Green and Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre all have access to ultrasound facilities.
