Mr Ciampolini trained at the Medical School in Florence, where he achieved full marks with honours. As a postgraduate, he achieved the fellowship qualifications FRCS (Eng) and FRCS (Tr and Orth) from the Royal College of Surgeons.
Before joining the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre, he was a hip and knee arthroplasty fellow at The Prince Charles Hospital, Brisbane. Prior to that, he held Specialist Registrar posts at Derriford Hospital, the Princess Elizabeth Orthopaedic Centre in Exeter, and Torbay Hospital.
Mr Ciampolini is a member of the British Orthopaedic Association, the British Medical Association and the Hospital Infection Society, and is also an Honorary Fellow of the Peninsula Medical School in Plymouth. Additionally, he has written and co-written a number of publications related to his specialist field, and is currently working on a range of research projects.
