Dr Berkel started his training as an anaesthetist in 1989 at the Marienkrankenhaus in Hamburg, Germany. In 1991 he joined the Department of Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care at St Georg Krankenhaus in Hamburg. His education covered all specialities of a supra-regional teaching hospital.
After gaining recognition as a Specialised Anaesthetist in 1994, he mainly worked autonomously in cardiac surgery and spent over 4 years working in ICU. He has extensive experience in invasive haemodynamic monitoring and therapy as well as in organ support. With over 1,000 out-of-hospital calls, he is also experienced in diverse emergency situations.
Before coming to England in 2004, Dr Berkel spent nine months at the Orthopaedic Department of the Jerusalem Krankenhaus in Hamburg.
