Healthcare organisation UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH) has been named as a top provider for joint replacement surgery in the country. UKSH is listed first for knee replacement surgery and third for hip operations in the Dr Foster Hospital Guide 2011.

UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH) was recently named as the winner in the Excellence in Risk Management category of the prestigious 2011 Laing & Buisson Independent Healthcare Awards. UKSH was also honoured to be nominated as a finalist in four other categories: Management Excellence, Best Use of Technology, Entrepreneurial Achievement and Hotel Services.

On Wednesday 2 November UKSH South West, which operates Cirencester, Devizes and Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centres, celebrated two years of treating local patients. UKSH South West has performed over 26,500 procedures since the three treatment centres opened in November 2009.

Angela Brady, the architect and artist responsible for the interior design of Emersons Green, Cirencester and Devizes NHS Treatment Centres has been appointed President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), the UK body for architecture and the architectural profession.

UKSH South West Appoints New Chairman

­UK Specialist Hospitals has appointed Robin Smith to oversee its expansion in the South West.

­

Robin Smith joins from Dorset PCT, where he was Chief Executive and will act as Chairman of UKSH South West. He will play a key role in the opening of UKSH’s three new hospitals across the South West in 2009.

Robin brings an unparalleled depth of understanding of healthcare delivery in the South West and his experience will help guide UKSH South West in delivering high quality patient care for the NHS.

With over 30 years experience in the National Health Service, Robin has held a variety of senior manager roles within the NHS, including Chief Executive of Mendip PCT, Health Authority Director of Commissioning, NHS Trust Director of Service Development and Director of Estates and Facilities.

Fiona Calnan, UKSH Chief Executive said "We are thrilled that Robin Smith has joined UKSH at such an exciting time in our South West expansion. With his broad and extensive experience he will be a key member of the team ensuring we continue to deliver exceptional results for our NHS patients across the region.”

Commenting on his appointment, Robin Smith said: "I am delighted to join UKSH at a time when its growth in the region presents so many opportunities to build on the great work of the team at Shepton Mallet. I look forward to helping to build on the reputation that UKSH has established for delivering outstanding patient service in this area.”

Robin was born on the Isle of Purbeck in Dorset and educated at Bournemouth, Southampton and Bristol Universities.
