Emersons Green and Peninsula NHS Treatment Centres have received top marks in the National Patient Safety Agency’s annual Patient Environment Action Team (PEAT) assessment.
Emersons Green and Peninsula NHS Treatment Centres, which are run by UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH), provide elective surgical procedures to NHS patients. The centres scored ‘excellent’ in all three categories: ‘environment’, ‘food’ and ‘privacy and dignity’.
Hospitals across the country were rated in the three categories as either ‘unacceptable’, ‘poor’, ‘acceptable’, ‘good’ or ‘excellent’. Just 324 of the 1,363 hospitals surveyed achieved the top score in every category, with Emersons Green and Peninsula NHS Treatment Centres two of only three independent sector hospitals in the South West to do so.
Fiona Calnan, CEO UKSH, was delighted with the results: “PEAT assessment is of huge importance to UKSH because its focus is on patient experience as evaluated by patients. The assessment process is comprehensive and to receive top marks in each category is testament to the importance we place on providing a clean and comfortable patient environment.”
PEAT assessments benchmark the non-clinical aspects of patient care at NHS and independent sector hospitals with 10 beds or more. The assessment teams are made up of a patient representative accompanied by staff. The assessment takes place on a single day following the patient journey in its entirety.
In the environment category the inside and outside of the hospital is observed. This takes into account signage from car parking into the hospital and within the hospital. The fabric of the building and the cleanliness in all patient areas are assessed. Food is tasted on the day and it must be demonstrated that there is a wide range of choice and availability. Privacy and dignity measures include single room availability, evidence of collecting and acting on patient feedback and the provision of same sex areas and facilities.
The excellent results achieved by Emersons Green and Peninsula NHS Treatment Centres at PEAT assessment reflect the consistently high patient satisfaction scores at the centres. During August 2011 over 99 per cent of patients sampled said they would recommend the centre to a friend.*
Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre also took part in PEAT assessment and scored highly. UKSH operates five treatment centres in the South West: Cirencester NHS Treatment, Devizes NHS Treatment Centre, Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre (Bristol), Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre (Plymouth) and Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre.
