If you’ve ever wanted a tour inside a hospital, the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre is now offering the opportunity for groups free of charge.
The hospital, which was opened just six years ago, is commissioned by NHS Plymouth on behalf of the Primary Care Trusts in the Peninsula and is currently run by UKSH, one of the largest orthopaedic providers in the South West. The centre prides itself on very low infection rates and excellent levels of patient satisfaction.
The tours, which last about an about an hour and a half, offer prospective patients the opportunity to meet with senior surgeons and see the wards, operating theatre and other areas of the hospital.
Mrs Eleanor Johnson, from Plympton enjoyed a tour with her ladies group. “A couple of us had already been patients at Peninsula Hospital and a few of us think we might land up there as patients and now wouldn’t mind a bit having looked round. It was the cleanest place we’ve ever seen,” she said. “Everyone found it fascinating, we had no idea what went on in the building and running of such a place. We had loads of questions, which were answered over a cup of tea and a biscuit at the end of the tour.”
Glenys Mansfield, Registered Manager, said: “Since commencing operation of the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre in August, we have been working with the local community to be sure they understand they can choose to have their treatment at our hospital when they discuss it with their GP.”
Treatments available at the hospital include major and minor orthopaedic procedures such as hip and knee replacement and carpal tunnel surgery.
Inpatients at the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre enjoy free personal televisions, phone calls and internet access, as well as fresh and nutritious meals provided by an on-site chef.
Tours take place early evenings during the week. For further information ring Claire Hansell on 01752 506005.
All NHS patients can choose where to have their treatment by speaking to their GP.
UKSH currently operates five hospitals in the South West: Cirencester NHS Treatment Centre (Gloucestershire), Devizes NHS Treatment Centre (Wiltshire), Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre (Bristol), Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre (Plymouth) and Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre (Somerset).
