Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre recently hosted a visit by 30 student nurses from the Japanese Red Cross Nursing College. The students, who have been learning English during their two-week stay in Plymouth, were given hands-on experience of radiology and physiotherapy practice at the centre.
The visit was arranged by Professor Anthony Hughes, who teaches at the college in Toyota. He chose to visit Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre because he heard positive feedback about the treatment centre from acquaintances in the Plymouth area.
Glenys Mansfield, Registered Manager at the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to welcome these students to the centre and share our expertise with them. That these students have found time during their trip to visit us speaks volumes for the growing reputation of UK Specialist Hospitals and the high level of service patients are receiving.”
The students were given a tour of the facility and participated in presentations which allowed them to experience firsthand what working as a nurse at Peninsula is like. Physiotherapists showed the students how patients are mobilised rapidly following surgery to accelerate their recovery, while the radiology team demonstrated their x-ray facilities.
Ikue Fukushima, 22, spoke through her interpreter: “If I could speak the language I would love to stay and work at the Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre. It’s my idea of a perfect place to nurse.”
Her friend Mayumi Mori agreed: “The hospital is as high-tech as any in Japan. It is spacious, beautifully clean and like a good hotel...it is relaxed but very professional.”
Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre is commissioned by NHS Plymouth on behalf of NHS Cornwall and Isles of Scilly, NHS Devon and Torbay Care Trust and offers NHS patients swift access to elective orthopaedic surgical procedures in Plymouth. It is one of five NHS treatment centres in the South West run by UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH). The other centres are located in Cirencester, Devizes, Emersons Green (Bristol) and Shepton Mallet.
