New bus service connects NHS patients to their local hospital

Published December 16th 2010

A new bus service is making it even easier for people from around Bristol to access local healthcare.

The number 30 bus, which runs between Emersons Green Sainsbury’s and Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre, connects people travelling on routes from the city centre (48/49), Chipping Sodbury (85/87), Temple Meads (462/462a), Avonmouth and Shirehampton (517/518) to the hospital.

The short hop from Emersons Green Sainsbury’s takes just ten minutes, making it a convenient alternative to driving.

The 30 service is funded by UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH), which operates the treatment centre, and South Gloucestershire Council. The bus is operated by Severnside Transport and runs every twenty minutes from 0730 to 1755, Monday to Friday, picking up from outside Emersons Green Sainsbury’s and dropping patients at the door of the hospital.

The bus is fully accessible for those with motability restrictions and buggies. An adult return costs £1.65 and patients over sixty travel free.

Commenting on the new service, Fiona Calnan, Chief Executive of UKSH, said: “This new service is a cost-effective, comfortable and convenient means of getting to the hospital and provides even more travel options for patients.”

Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre is a purpose-built facility in north-east Bristol, which provides planned surgical procedures to NHS patients on behalf of the NHS.

Penny Harris, Chief Executive of NHS South Gloucestershire, said: "This new bus route is extremely good news for patients as it gives them another option about how to travel to and from the NHS treatment centre. It is important that NHS services are as accessible as possible and we hope this will be a great help."

UKSH currently operates five hospitals in the South West, including Cirencester NHS Treatment Centre (Gloucestershire), Devizes NHS Treatment Centre (Wiltshire), Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre (Bristol), Peninsula NHS Treatment Centre (Plymouth) and Shepton Mallet NHS Treatment Centre (Somerset).
