30 members of the Emersons Green Women’s Institute (WI) recently attended an open evening at Emersons Green NHS Treatment Centre.
UK Specialist Hospitals (UKSH), which runs the centre, laid on the event to give the group an insight into the services available to NHS patients in their local area.
Feedback questionnaires given to guests have shown the event was a hit with the group. One guest commented that “the talks were very informative and the hospital itself is fantastic”, while another praised the “excellent provision of information at an informative level”.
Dr Cath Finn, Medical Director UKSH South West, started the evening with an overview of the treatment centre’s facilities and the procedures provided there. Mr Ahmed Mohamed, Consultant Gynaecologist and Mr Tamas Bardos, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, then gave presentations on female urinary incontinence and hip replacement surgery respectively. The presentations provoked stimulating questions from the WI members and feedback questionnaire results revealed that every one of the respondents found the presentations interesting and informative,.
The presentations were followed by a break for refreshments, with guests taking the opportunity to discuss issues such as cleanliness and infection control with UKSH consultants and hospital management.
The WI group was then split into three groups, in order to prevent any disturbance to patients, and taken on a tour of the treatment centre. The guests were given access to every department as their guide described the journey a patient makes from their arrival at reception to their discharge.
Ian S Thomson, Executive Director UKSH South West, said: “It’s fantastic to be able to accommodate our local community groups and give them full access to the treatment centre that’s on their doorstep. Over half our guests admitted to having either no knowledge or poor knowledge of the centre before their visit, so I’m delighted with the success of this event and look forward to many more.”
